International Patient Summit is a first of its kind patient and caregivers meeting that is planned and delivered by patients and caregivers. Hosted by Patient Academy for Innovation and Research – PAIR, it aims to bring people from around the Asia Pacific and Middle East region to deliberate and discuss topics that are important for them over two days of panel discussions, workshops and breakout sessions. The Summit theme is Equitable healthcare: co-planning, co-designing and co-delivery’ with inclusion of patient voice and lived experience. Accelerating progress towards universal health coverage and delivering on political commitments made in 2019 has never been more urgent. Concrete action is needed to strengthen equitable health systems – including public health functions that are critical for pandemic prevention, preparedness and response, vaccine equity, access to diagnostics and health financing.
A key principle of patient-centred healthcare is patient engagement in the co-creation of safe, qualitative and equitable healthcare.Patients have a right and responsibility to participate, to their level of ability and preference, as a partner in making healthcare decisions that affect their lives. These principles are central to the WHO approach to Health Equity which is to respond to unmet public health needs by creating new ways of thinking and working with a focus on the needs of vulnerable populations to achieve universal health coverage within the context of the Sustainable Development Goals. There are synergies between PAIR’s work on innovative patient-centred healthcare and global efforts to achieve universal health coverage. The Summit will explore how patient-centred approach can address the factors that will lead to universal health coverage and consider the patients’ perspective.
The Summit will include capacity-focussed sessions on how patients’ organizations can advocate on issues of innovation and equity to healthcare. The multi-stakeholder programme will explore a patient-centred innovation to healthcare approach as it relates to three themes: Co-planning, Co-designing & Co-delivery in the context of Asia Pacific and Middle Eastern region.
Plenary and workshop sessions will focus on topics that explore questions such as: What are the barriers to access to disruptive technologies in different world regions? What are the principles that promote gender parity and greater representation from women? What are the indicators of patient-centred innovation in healthcare financing?
The event is jointly hosted by DakshamA Health and Education – India, Philippines Alliance of Patient Organisations- PAPO- Philippines and Heart to Heart Foundation – Thailand.
